On 12 December 2024, the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) hosted the third African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) National Governing Council (NGC) meeting.

The NGC, a central structure in the continental APRM, is composed of civil society and select government representatives. It spearheads the implementation and domestication of the APRM in South Africa.

Mr Thulani Tshefuta, the NGC Chairperson, led the meeting, which included members of the NGC, the National Secretariat at DPSA, the APRM Continental Secretariat, and the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO).

During the meeting, the APRM NGC formalised its partnership with DIRCO and the APRM Continental Secretariat to better link  with the Southern African Development Community (SADC), the African Union (AU), and global programmes.

The NGC meeting also approved the 2024 General Elections Observer Mission Report and the Draft Bilateral Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Namibia NGC.

The NGC meeting agreed on priority activities for 2025. These included  monitoring and promoting the Second-Generation Country Review recommendations; facilitating sessions  between the National Assembly and APRM Eminent Persons from South Africa; and convening statutory meetings.
