Yesterday, on 23 January 2024, Minister Kiviet commenced her four-day Back-to-School outreach programme with visits to Baviaanskloof Kouga Academy and Quagga Primary School.
During her visit to Baviaanskloof Academy, which caters to 323 learners, Minister Kiviet received an update from the school principal, Ms. Anitha Swarts, regarding developments since the Minister’s last visit. The report addressed issues previously raised by the Minister, such as an improperly constituted school governing body (SGB), a lack of scholar transport, and financial allocation challenges.
According to the report and discussions, Minister Kiviet was assured that these issues have been resolved. However, the SGB members implored Minister Kiviet to help in addressing the school’s current challenges, which include inadequate security, intermittent power supply, and learners lacking identity documents and birth certificates.
Concluding the first day of the Back-to-School outreach program, Minister Kiviet visited Quagga Primary School, located at the Craig Daws farm in Patensie. The school’s principal, Ms. SA Maseti, delivered a brief presentation on the school during the visit.
Minister Kiviet’s visits to these two schools are part of a follow-up initiative that includes meetings with stakeholders such as teachers, local leaders, the SGB, and the community to discuss educational matters. The purpose is to ensure that previously raised concerns have been addressed to facilitate a smooth start to the academic year while also assessing the current challenges.
