The Minister for the Public Service and Administration, Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi, has announced an adjustment to subsistence and camping allowances. Effective from 1 April 2025, the revision reflects the latest average annual Consumer Price Index (CPI) change of 4.4%.
“Subsistence and camping allowances are payable in terms of parts XII and XIII of PSCBC Resolution 3 of 1999, issued in terms of the provisions of section 3(5)(a) and 5(6)(b) of the Public Service Act, 1994,” the Minister explained in the Circular.
The adjustments are meant to protect the monetary value of the additional expenses that public servants may incur while performing their duties away from home. Under the provisions of the Public Service Act of 1994, specifically as outlined in parts XII and XIII of the PSCBC Resolution 3 of 1999, the following adjustments will be implemented regarding subsistence and camping allowances:
Type of Allowance | Previous Allowance w.e.f 1 April 2024 | Current Allowance w.e.f 1 April 2025 |
Special daily allowance to compensate for incidental expenses where actual expenses are claimed | R171.00 | R178.87 |
Daily allowances payable to camping personnel | R209.00 | R218.61 |
“These amendments reflect the government’s recognition of the need to adjust allowances in line with inflation, ensuring that public service workers are adequately supported in their roles,” said Minister Inkosi Buthelezi.
The increased allowances will have to be accommodated within the existing departmental budgets as the adjustments come into effect, the Minister advised.
