The Head of the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), Advocate Andy Mothibi, led the South African delegation to the G20 Anti-Corruption Working Group (ACWG) consultative meeting held in Harare, Zimbabwe. The meeting, facilitated by the African Union, marked an important milestone as South Africa officially assumed the G20 Presidency on December 1, 2024.

South Africa’s presidency underscores the country’s commitment to advancing the global fight against corruption and promoting good governance. The Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA), in collaboration with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) and the Special Investigating Unit (SIU), has been designated as a lead department in driving South Africa’s anti-corruption agenda during its G20 Presidency.

Key recommendations from the meeting included prioritizing the enhancement of public sector transparency, integrity, and accountability, strengthening mechanisms for efficient asset recovery, and ensuring the protection of whistleblowers for the G20 ACWG during South Africa’s Presidency. The meeting also emphasized the importance of fostering inclusive participation from the private sector, civil society, and academia to develop a comprehensive and collaborative approach to combating corruption. Participants stressed the need for capacity-building initiatives and cross-border collaboration to address corruption-related challenges effectively.

As a way forward, South Africa committed to implementing these recommendations through its leadership role in the G20 ACWG, with a focus on aligning them with the African Union’s Agenda 2063 and the global Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). South Africa will also host consultative platforms to ensure ongoing dialogue and the effective integration of African priorities into the global anti-corruption agenda.

The outcomes of the G20 ACWG discussions in 2025 will be pivotal in shaping a unified and robust global response to corruption while advancing transparency, accountability, and good governance on the African continent and beyond.
