Delivering his maiden Budget Vote Speech recently, newly appointed Minister for the Public Service and Administration (MPSA), Inkosi Mzamo Buthelezi, confirmed that the Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA), will be co-hosting the prestigious International Conference on Theory and Practice of Electronic Governance (ICE-GOV).

Scheduled to take place between the 1st and 4th of October 2024 in Tshwane, Gauteng Province, the 17th ICE-GOV Conference follows South Africa’s successful bid to host the prestigious public sector Information Communication Technology (ICT) conference, spearheaded by the University of Witwatersrand School of Governance (WSG).

Hosted under the auspices of the United Nations University Operating Unit on Policy-Driven Electronic Governance (UNU-EGOV), about 6900 global and local people from academia, governments, international organisations, civil society, and industry are expected at the 2024 ICE-GOV Conference in South Africa.

Minister Inkosi Buthelezi’s Budget Vote Speech at the National Assembly listed the need for modernising and digitalising the public service among the priorities.

“Co-hosting] the ICE-GOV with the United Nations and Wits University will allow participants to share the latest insights and experiences in the theory and practice of Electronic Governance,” said Minister Inkosi Buthelezi.

Since its establishment in 2007, ICE-GOV has grown into a prestigious annual calendar event on Electronic Governance, bringing together a range of participations, from universities and research institutions to the public and private sectors.

Past ICE-GOV editions have been organised in five continents and 15 different cities, and its South African debut is an opportunity to showcase the country’s expertise and experiences in electronic government.

Currently, the organisers are processing the conference and workshop papers in line with the 12 identified content themes, which range from tackling Trust and Ethical Digital Governance issues to Digital transformation and innovation in the Public Sector. In addition to serving as a knowledge and expertise-sharing platform, the ICEGOV 2024 also offers exhibition and sponsorship opportunities for the private sector to expose their products and services to an international audience.
