Public Service and Administration Deputy Minister Dr Chana Pilane-Majake said more qualifying public servants must be enrolled in the Government Housing Scheme (GEHS).
Speaking at the National Council of Provinces Policy Debate on the Ministry for Public Service and Administration (MPSA) Debate in Cape Town today, Dr Pilane-Majake said: Out of 1.3 million government employees, about 1.1 million are eligible for housing allowance.
As of 31 March 2023, 774 235 public servants are homeowners through the housing scheme. In this financial year, we plan to increase this number by at least 1500 government employees.
We equally seek to find housing solutions for government employees who do not qualify for housing through the normalcy scheme, or for home loans through the commercial banks.
In this regard, we are organising financial rehabilitation education and awareness sessions to positively position government employees to access housing, the Deputy Minister said.
The GEHS is dedicated to enabling public service employees to have easy access to housing and related housing products.
For this financial year, the scheme is allocated a budget of R14.666 million. This includes R5,259 million for goods and services and R9,399 million for compensation.
