Â
In June this year, President Cyril Ramaphosa visited the community of Hammanskraal, north of Pretoria, following the cholera outbreak, which has claimed more than 20 lives in the area.
Â
Since then, government has announced short-term interventions that are currently being implemented to address the water and sanitation challenges in the area.
Â
During the Presidential visit, Water and Sanitation Minister, Mr Senzo Mchunu indicated that between August 2023 and March 2024, an improved wastewater technology solution will be installed at the Rooiwal plant, which will treat the sewage better and increase the quality of discharged effluent into Apies River.Â
Â
This is believed that it will reduce the levels of E. coli in the treated sewage.
Â
Government also committed to improve the drinking water provision to the residents of Hammanskraal and Magalies Water will install a portable water treatment plant at its Klipdrift Water Treatment Works near Hammanskraal.Â
