Yesterday, Ms. Noxolo Kiviet, the Minister for the Public Service and Administration, joined His Excellency President Cyril Ramaphosa in celebrating the Mandela Day event at the birthplace of Tata Nelson Mandela in Qunu.
President Cyril Ramaphosa unveiled two statues of the Father of the Nation on 18 July 2023 in Mthatha, Eastern Cape, as part of the International Nelson Mandela Month celebrations.
The two statues were unveiled respectively at the Nelson Mandela Museum, Bhunga Building in Mthatha and Nelson Mandela Museum Youth and Heritage Centre in Qunu.
The two statues of Nelson Mandela resemble Nelson Mandela as a Statesman and the other as a traditionalist.
This also follows the Public Service Commission (PSC) in the Eastern Cape and the Nelson Mandela Museum singing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on July 17, 2023, to honour and celebrate Mandela’s legacy.
The MoU aims to create a learning, leadership, and development platform for youth to preserve essential heritage assets related to the message of courage, inspiration, and lessons learned from Mandela’s legacy. The focus areas of the MoU include the preservation of the Nelson Mandela statue at the museum, which upholds the values and vision of Nelson Mandela for a free and peaceful South Africa.
The Nelson Mandela Museum is an important institution that will keep the legacy of the late President Nelson Mandela alive. This year’s Nelson Mandela International Day is commemorated under the theme: “It is in Your Hands.” The International Mandela Day activities began with a public lecture at the Nelson Mandela Museum Youth and Heritage Centre in Qunu.
The MoU also includes collaboration through sharing facilities and other resources to improve the lives of South African people. The two organizations will also organize a joint public lecture series on subjects of mutual interest.
