Delegates at the APRM Focal Minister's Meeting

The sixth democratic administration will only achieve its priorities through strengthening a high standard of good corporate governance, says Public Service and Administration Minister Senzo Mchunu.

Speaking at the 29th meeting of the specialised agency of the African Union (AU)-the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) in Johannesburg on Tuesday, the Minister said “the priorities set out by the Sixth Administration will not be achieved if we do not strengthen all of the dimensions of governance on Democratic and Political Governance, Economic Governance, Corporate Governance and Socio-economic Governance.

“If we do not overcome our governance challenges across all of these dimensions, we cannot talk about transforming the economy to serve the people, advance social transformation, building safer communities, fighting corruption and promoting ethical integrity.

“For this current Government, failure to achieve these Priorities will be a failure to meet the commitment we made in accepting the Electoral Mandate we received in May 2019 in the General Elections,” he said.

The Minister described the APRM as a very important and necessary instrument to ensure that government do practice good governance.

“We must use the APRM to renew the social compact with all citizens that indeed, we are serious about rooting out bad governance across all segments of our society.

“We are determined to ensure that even the re-establishment of the national governance structures and processes for the APRM adhere to this principle of establishing social compacts,” said Minister Mchunu.

The APRM was established in 2003 by the African Union in the framework of the implementation of the New Partnership for Africa’s Development (NEPAD).

APRM is a tool for sharing experiences, reinforcing best practices, identifying deficiencies, assessing capacity-building needs to foster policies, standards and practices that lead to political stability, high economic growth, sustainable development and accelerated sub-regional and continental economic integration.
