Strengthening Global Cooperation Against Corruption

The recent BRICS Anti-Corruption Working Group (ACWG) meeting held on May 5-6, 2025, in Brasilia, Brazil, was an important moment in our collective efforts to combat corruption. Under the theme “Strengthening Global South Cooperation for a More Inclusive and Sustainable Governance,” representatives from member countries gathered to reaffirm their commitment to fighting this pervasive issue.

During the meeting, South Africa highlighted its technological innovations designed to enhance transparency and accountability. These advancements must be harnessed to foster integrity across borders. The discussions centered around key topics such as asset recovery and the application of artificial intelligence in anti-corruption initiatives, illustrating the need to adapt strategies to the modern landscape.

The meeting also served as a platform for reflecting on the Implementation Review Mechanism of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC). South Africa emphasized its readiness to participate in upcoming sessions, building on the initiatives established under the Russia Chairship in 2024. This continued collaboration among BRICS nations is vital for the effective implementation of shared goals.

A significant proposal from Brazil involved supporting the Global Operation Network of Anti-Corruption Law Enforcement Authorities (GlobE Network). South Africa’s National Prosecuting Authority and the Special Investigation Unit are prepared to participate, reinforcing the commitment to capacity building in anti-corruption measures.

The Brazil Chairship’s decision to share draft outcome reports for member states’ input, rather than issuing formal Compendiums, reflects an inclusive approach that values the contributions of all member countries. This collaborative spirit is necessary as we move forward.

Looking ahead, the next ACWG meeting will take place during the UNCAC Conference of States in Doha, Qatar. The focus will be on incentivizing the private sector to adopt integrity measures, marking an opportunity to engage various stakeholders in the fight against corruption.

The outcomes of the Brasilia meeting serve as a reminder that the commitment to anti-corruption measures must remain unwavering. By working together and sharing best practices, BRICS nations can create a more transparent and accountable governance framework that benefits all citizens in the Global South. Let us harness this momentum to strengthen ties and lead the charge against corruption.
