ne of the striking things about the hree editions (including this one) is how he topic of technology and the Public
ervice keeps cropping up, especially the broader sense that includes the dea of the fourth industrial revolution. or example, the Western Cape’s
The Service Delivery Review (SDR) T communities to play a meaningful role in
for the Sixth Administration. Two of these have a bearing on the mandate of the MPSA.
These are, namely, “consolidating the social wages through reliable and qual- ity basic services” and building “a capa- ble, ethical and developmental State”, that are dependent on there being a higher sense of Batho Pele among pub- lic servants.
In a similar vein, the article Heeding the call to serve profiles the rise of Humbulani Tshivhase up the the ranks of the Public Service. Having started as an intern a decade ago, Tshivhase is now Director and Organisational De- sign Specialist.
Tshivhase’s story illustrates what un- derpins the implementation of Devel- opmental Programmes in the Public Service, that are primarily targeted at young people, as reported in the Pub- lic Service Tackling Youth Unemploy- ment article.
The march of technology is relentless, which explains why it seems each edition of the SDR magazine carries something on technology and more specifically the Fourth Industrial Rev- olution.
Two pieces are worth highlighting in this regard. The first one, Behold the Future of Work, is a summary of a research report by the Institute for Futures Re- search, which is based at Stellen- bosch University. The other article is a thoughtful interview on the meaning of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in the context of Africa’s development tra- jectory. The interviewee is Professor Rasigan Maharajh, founding Chief Di- rector of the Institute for Economic Re- search on Innovation at the Tshwane University of Technology.
While the edition carries snippets that the reader would hopefully find infor- mative and stimulating.
