The Minister for the Public Service and Administration, Mr Senzo Mchunu, visited the Mabila and Moore families in Skierlik Moutain View Informal Settlement in Mamelodi, Tshwane, today, Friday 5 March 2021.<\/p>\n
This follows the tragic incident which occurred on Saturday, 27 February 2021, where the boys aged 4 and 7, drowned while swimming in a quarry that was not cordoned off.<\/p>\n
Minister Mchunu was accompanied by the Minister for Public Works and Infrastructure, Minister Patricia de Lille.<\/p>\n
The purpose of the visit was for the Ministers to pay their respects to the families, deliver donations to the families, and further visit the site where the incident occurred.<\/p>\n
Upon arrival at the Mabila home, the Ministers were greeted and welcomed by the Ward 100 Councillor, Ms Rebone Maleka.<\/p>\n
The Ministers expressed their deepest condolences, lamenting that no parent should have to bury their child. The Moore family said the conditions that residents are forced to live under were not indicative of a developing South Africa and requested the Ministers to make their visits to the informal settlement more regular as opposed to upon the happening of a tragedy.<\/p>\n
The Ministers conducted a walk-about around the area where the quarry is situated, which area has since been fenced off.<\/p>\n
Councillor Maleka confirmed that an independent investigation would be carried out. The Ministers expressed their interest to be kept abreast with the developments of the investigation.<\/p>\n\r\n
