The Seventh Employee Health and Wellness INDABA

Theme: "Employee Health and Wellness and Diversity Management for Public Service Excellence”

Background

For the past six years the Department of Public Service and Administration has been hosting learning sessions referred to as “The Public Service INDABA”. These “Indabas” have evolved over time from being consultative HIV&AIDS forums to platforms for Comprehensive Employee Health and Wellness policy consultation, review and assessment.

The “Indabas” have also been forum for learning policy and programme implementation skills through presentations on best practice documented, internationally and locally, as required by policy and programme implementers.

This year’s “Indaba” is the seventh and will be held at the Durban ICC on the 21st -23rd October 2007.

Objectives

The objectives of this Conference are:

  • To launch the Consultative Document on Employee Health and Wellness Strategic Framework made up of four functional pillars of 1) HIV &AIDS (which is aligned to the one HIV&AIDS National Strategic Plan 2007-2011), 2) Health Management 3)Occupational Hygiene and 4) Wellness Management.
  • To launch the Handbook on Accessibility and Reasonable Accommodation (Job ACCESS) Methodology And Approach
  • To locate Employee Health and Wellness in the broader context of National Workers Health as directed by the World Health Organisations Global Plan of Action for Workers Health 2008-2017 and set a policy agenda for a National Worker Agenda for South Africa.
  • To identify requisite skills for quantification of evidence, impact, and productivity that should follow Employee Health and Wellness Interventions at policy and programme implementation level.
  • To learn from other countries on emerging best practices and developmental approaches to Workers Health Promotion and Mainstreaming of HIV&AIDS To promote Workers health Promotion programmes of Disease Management programme as managed by GEMS and other Medical Aid Schemes servicing public servants, Development of resilience in Public Servants working in stressful environment, Psychosocial Stressors in the Work Place and reasonable accommodation with respect to Disability Management in the Work Place.

  • The target number of participants is 450 that will be drawn from the
  • The public service (Employee Health and Wellness (EHW) Practitioners, and Senior Managers in EHW and related fields at National and Provincial Government Departments);
  • International Experts
  • GEMS and other Government and Intergovernmental Organisations
  • The Private sector Experts
Conclusion

The EHW was first discussed in 2006 and will be presented in this conference as a draft framework for comment before Cabinet processes and being launched later in 2007.

It is envisaged that robust engagement and discussions during the "commissions" will provide prospective and objective resolutions to the emerging Public Service Worker Health Promotion Program.

International and best practice models in both Employee Healthy and Wellness and Diversity Management will be addressed to benchmark the SA interventions against these. Best practice among individual departments will be shared and
