Theatre Tool Guide

As an HIV/AIDS Coordinator or a volunteer responsible for HIV activities in your department, theatre is a simple but powerful tool for focusing peoples attention on the issues at hand. Whether you want to promote the ABC’s on an ongoing basis, advertise the fact that there is a workshop or event, or just raise awareness in general. It’s fun! Entertaining! and Educational! It captures peoples attention and stays in their memory forever.

Industrial theatre holds up a mirror so people can see themselves and the situations they find themselves in. It speaks to them in their language, about issues that affect them. It does so in a humorous and lighthearted manner yet without trivializing issues and offers solutions and hope.

You may even choose to perform the plays to the public you serve to assure them that service levels will be maintained.

Two Options:

Professional:

If you choose a professional ambush you provide us with dates and times for the ambush as well as details about the environment and we will come and perform the ambush with a professional group of actors.

DIY:

If you choose a DIY play, you get volunteers from your staff to act in the play. We send a professional director plus props and costumes and he/she directs and rehearses the play with your group for a couple of days.

Your very own staff then performs the play to their colleagues when and wherever the need arises. The props can be hired from us from time to time, but they are so simple to make it would be more cost effective for the volunteers to take it on as a project and create their own props consequent to seeing and working with ours.

How to use theatre:

Step 1: Decide what you would like to achieve with the play?

eg.

advertise the Health Channel
create awareness of the Impact of HIV/AIDS on service delivery
announce a workshop or event
launch your aids campaign
reassure the public.

Step 2: Identify your target audience.

eg.

People living with aids
People who do not know their status
