MEDIA STATEMENTS: Minister for the Public Service and Administration welcomes action by the Special Investigating Unit

Date: 18 Nov 2020

Following its approach to the Special Tribunal for a final forfeiture of assets, the Special Investigating Unit (SIU) obtained a final order which resulted in the seizure of assets worth over R18 million, belonging to former Transnet executive, Mr Herbert Msagala.

It was reported in The Citizen newspaper, that Mr Msagala is accused of engaging in corrupt and criminal activities and has been implicated, along with IGS Consulting Engineers, a company which was awarded dubious tenders from Transnet Capital Projects, during Mr Msagala’s tenure as an executive.

The Minister for the Public Service and Administration, Mr Senzo Mchunu, welcomes and commends the actions taken by the SIU in ensuring that those who enrich themselves whilst occupying high positions in government or State-Owned Entities are brought to book. As a public servant occupying a high level position, Mr Msagala abused his position of authority and contravened the legal prescripts which guard against such conduct. We anticipate that the SIU will make headway in its investigations. The Minister further said: “The fight against corruption and fraud needs to intensify and the actions of the SIU are evidence of the seriousness of this fight. Public servants, whether at executive level or not, will be caught out and brought to book for their actions. Let the message be clear: Corruption has no place in the South Africa we want!”
