PAGC 2013

New model & strategy

For the PAGC 2013, a new model has been adopted and it is envisaged that companies will be participating as partners to the event and the president's charity as opposed to just being sponsors. From 2013, the PAGC will also be transformed to become a professional golf event premised and driven by a very strong commercial and partnership programme.

In view of the exponential growth experienced in 2011 and in light of further growing the event and raising its profile, it is proposed that from 2013 the Challenge be transformed into a professional tournament with a developmental component for aspiring golfers.

The golf day will take place over a 2 day period whereby day 1 will be a Pro Am day and day 2 will be the professional challenge. The Pro Am day will be a pre cursor to the main challenge that will cater for aspiring golfers and act as a developmental platform.

New model & strategy

Funds will be raised through :

  • Partnership through CSI Programme
  • Sponsorship of golf holes
  • Auctions
  • Pledges

Partner Package

Partner to commit a minimum of R1.2m from its annual CSI budget over three years (with an annual escalation of 10%)

This furthermore opens the door to build a more long term relationship with the corporate entities. It also enables the relationship to take on a new form.

By implication this suggests a more in-depth and long term relationship. The golf day thus becomes one of the acknowledgement vehicles rather than the main vehicle for brand and participation expo''s.

Sponsor Package

Companies will participate through sponsoring holes.

Companies participate by sponsoring a hole at the acknowledgement platform- the golf day in return for a related benefit.

The opportunity will be open to all industries in the private sector.

Sponsorship amount to be determined annually.

Key Partner Benefits

A networking opportunity at the President's Address Golf Day with the ability to supply a predetermined amount of branding. It is recommended that this is not linked to the sponsorship of holes - it is crucial that we steer away from the "sponsorship" arena.

Breakfast or dinner opportunity for each partner with the President for the duration of the year in the city of their choice.

CSI partnership to be linked to education. This will be linked to the partner's CSI strategy.

The CSI partnership will culminate in the adoption of a deserving school by the partner in the city that the breakfast or dinner is held. The partner will adopt the school for the period of their partnership (3 years) and the school will also be invited to the breakfast or dinner.

The partner will mentor the top students within that school and will provide an opportunity for internships and possible employment of the top performing students within their organization.

Access to the list of graduates (need to discuss with the trust the extent of the recruitment/internship opportunity).

Associated Benefits (Media Partnerships)

Negotiation of partnership with key media institutions, particularly the broadcasting and key print media houses, to profile the event.

A full page advertisement in one business daily and in the weekend newspapers where a letter from the President acknowledges the contribution made by these corporate partners.

A mobile exhibition display of that is supplied to each head office for a period of 2 months, that tells the story of the trust and of the corporate involvement the partners and the JZ Education Trust that will act as a symbol of the partnership and signify the partnership in a multimedia format.

The Jacob G Zuma RDP Education Trust - Educate a Child, Empower a Nation

The Jacob G Zuma RDP Education Trust was formed in 1995 by its Patron, His Excellency Jacob G Zuma, President of the Republic of South Africa, who was a Member of the Executive Council (MEC) of the Province of KwaZulu-Natal at that time.

Using an RDP Discretionary Fund of R500 000, which was provided to each MEC to establish a project of his/her choice, Mr Zuma opted to focus his attention on providing access to education for the most disadvantaged and vulnerable children and youth in society. This focus on education was as a result of his firm belief in education being the most real and sustainable form of empowerment.

The Jacob G Zuma RDP Education Trust started its work in KwaZulu-Natal, and has since extended its footprints to the Eastern Cape and the Limpopo Provinces. It strategic objective is to extend its reach to the rest of South Africa within the next three to five years.

The Jacob G Zuma RDP Education Trust is governed by a Board of Trustees comprising representatives from the private sector, former beneficiaries of the Trust and academics. The day-to-day operations are managed by a team led by the Chief Executive Officer, with offices in Durban, Inkandla, East London, Polokwane and Johannesburg.

Over the years, the Jacob G Zuma RDP Education Trust has benefited over 20 000 young people. Currently, it is supporting 900 young people at tertiary and basic education levels.

The Trust depends, mainly, on donations and sponsorships to advance its objectives. It has forged strategic partnerships with organizations such as Cipla South Africa, Camac International Corporation and MerSeta on educational matters of common interest. The Trust has a policy of utilizing a least 80% of all money raised towards its core business and 20% or less towards its operations. On a yearly basis, it is audited by PriceWaterHouseCoopers (PWC).

Activities of the Jacob G Zuma RDP Education Trust

In an effort to bridge the divide between the disadvantaged background of its beneficiaries and the competitive workplace that they find themselves in after graduation, the Jacob G Zuma RDP Education Trust seeks to introduce students to mentorship, internship and in-service opportunities. These outreach programmes are over and above the core business of providing access to education.

Objectives of the Jacob G Zuma RDP Education Trust

  • To increase access to educational opportunities for disadvantaged children, particularly in rural areas;
  • To target and offer opportunities in higher education to promising youth from rural areas, with a passion for self and community development;
  • To link its efforts with those organizations sharing a similar vision; and
  • To sensitize graduates and professionals, from rural areas, to the need for their professional input in the development of their communities.

Distinguishing Attributes of the Jacob G Zuma RDP Education Trust

  • The Jacob G Zuma RDP Education Trust has an intimate understanding of its beneficiaries and their backgrounds and abilities;
  • It ensures that it takes a holistic approach in advancing its core business; and
  • The inclusion of former beneficiaries amongst staff members and the Board of Trustees ensures continuity, and this also keeps the Jacob G Zuma RDP Education Trust updated with regards to the realities and challenges faced by contemporary students and learners.
