CAPAM 2008: Biennial conference

Date: 19-22 October 2008
Venue: Bridgetown, Barbados

Theme: Continuing the Shared Journey: Achieving Public Service Excellence

In partnership with the Government of Barbados, the 2008 CAPAM Biennial Conference will be held in Bridgetown, Barbados, October 19 – 22, 2008. As CAPAM’s premier pan-Commonwealth conference, the event will bring together senior public service professionals, heads of government, academics, research institutions and other individuals to engage a discussion on achieving public service excellence in the context of improving service delivery, fostering good governance, and building institutional capacity. Under the conference theme “Continuing the Shared Journey: Achieving Public Service Excellence,” speakers and workshops will identify strategies, pre-requisites – both human and structural, and shared lessons in the development of a public service that actively responds to the needs of citizens in the current context.

The most recent biennial conference in 2006, held in Sydney, Australia welcomed over four hundred delegates from 46 different countries. CAPAM biennial conferences offer a unique forum of discussion that actively engages leaders, practitioners and academics in conversation and exchange.

The schedule of events will feature a pre-conference workshop on the theme of the Vulnerability of Small Island Developing States. Delegates will also be invited to take part in Learning Journeys which includes visits to the Barbados 2007 Cricket World Cup facilities, St. Nicholas Abbey (a working sugar plantation) and a learning journey about the history of the steel pan. The conference proceedings will also feature the finalist presentations of the 2008 CAPAM International Innovations Awards. The selected finalists are recognized for their contribution to innovation and excellence in citizen centered service delivery and will be selected by an esteemed international jury of public service professionals.

As a non-profit association, CAPAM is sustained by members that believe in the value of engaging conversation across diverse national and regional experiences. CAPAM is supported by key international leaders that work across borders to promote the recognition of the shared public service experience.
